Cole's first boo boo! June 11

My baby’s first boo boo

This morning I had the most horrifying experience of my life. My son got his first "booboo." It was awful. Here's what happened: my cat Ginger gets VERY excited very easily. So something got her excited and she went running through the living room. My sweet baby was asleep in his little bouncer and she jumped over him and landed on him. I swear, it was like everything happened in slow motion. I saw her running towards him, and I started running, but I was too late. Next thing I know, Cole was screaming at the top of his lungs, and there was blood all over his face. I cannot even put into words the feelings that went through me when I saw him like that. It was sort of like the worst broken heart you could ever have mixed with fear and anger. I scooped him up and took a look at his face. It really looked awful at the time. I grabbed a washcloth and wet it, and wiped off his face. I could see that there were 3 scratches - 2 on his forehead and one on his eyelid. The one on his eyelid was the one that had me worried - what if his eye had been injured? Almost hysterical, I called Eric. I could barely get the words out, and he told me to go ahead and take Cole to the emergency room, just in case, to check out his eye. I could barely breathe the whole drive over, and when we got there, they got us right in and checked him out. They put these eyedrops in his eye that glow under fluorescent light and then shined one over his eye to see if there were any scratches. Thank God his eye is fine! Phew! What a relief! They also cleaned his scratches really well, and told me to keep neosporin on them for the next few days. The Dr. assured me that there should not be any scars, but to keep sunscreen on the areas once they've pretty much healed just in case. I am sure the staff at the hospital thought I was nuts for bringing him in for a few scratches, but I didn't care. I had to be sure he was ok. I just kept thinking about Grey's Anatomy, and how they all get so mad when they have to deal with some "silly" injury because they want the gross car accidents or other exciting stuff.

I think the excitement really wore out Cole because he's fast asleep now. It is so sad to look over at him and see those scratches... And you know what the scariest part of this whole thing? It's only his first boo boo! I'm sure he'll have many more in his life and I don't know how I can take it!! I just want to protect him and keep him safe. One of the nurses said it best when she said, "This hurts you more than him!" Ahh...how true that is.
